The show features the usual selection of romantic and other dramas facing TV high school students as they mature, which they typically face with a combination of TV-child naivete and articulate world-wisdom beyond their years. In fact, the show's characters often speak in a manner more resembling arts postgraduates than teenagers; their dialogue is littered with references to film and literature, complex language, and is often extraordinarily verbose. This slightly unrealistic but sometimes entertaining facet of the show has been widely commented on (and parodied), though as the characters age this incongruity is less noticeable.
The first four seasons show the teenagers trying to get through high school, in the fifth and sixth season, the main characters are at college (except Pacey, who chose to work instead). Their lives have changed significantly and so have Dawson, Joey, Jen, Jack and Pacey. Each of them is struggling to find his or her place in the world as well as trying to get over the past that was painful for each of them in one way or another.
The series is filmed on location in Wilmington, Durham and Raleigh, North Carolina, Dawson's Creek was created by Kevin Williamson and is produced by Paul Stupin, Tom Kapinos and Greg Prange for Sony Pictures Television Inc.
The show featured a kiss between a male gay couple in 1999, apparently the first network TV show in the United States to do so. This was by no means the first worldwide, for instance, such a kiss occurred in an Australian soap opera, Number 96, in the early 1970's.
