Cyrus West Field (
1819-
1892) was an
American financier who, along with
Samuel Morse, founded a corporation to lay the first transatlantic
telegraph cable between
Newfoundland and
Ireland. This telegraph cable, laid in
1858, lasted only for one month.
Field later headed a consortium which succeeded in laying the first transatlantic telegraph cable.
