A cough is a sudden, forceful release of air from the
lungs. A cough is usually caused by a buildup of
phlegm[?] in the
trachea. It can also be caused by food going down the trachea instead of the
esophagus, although this usually results in
choking instead. When someone is coughing a lot, they are usually sick. People can also have a chronic cough, see
