Commentary is known for its passionate support for Israel, opposition to any Palestinian state and favoring American unilaterist foreign policy. During later years the magazine has advocated regime change by force in Iraq, but also a range of other countries considered hostile to the interests of Israel and the U.S.; the list of countries includes Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Libya. The case for placing the oil fields of Saudi Arabia under permanent American military occupation has also been advocated by this publication.
The founders of neooconservatism, Irving Kristol and Norman Podhoretz[?] have both served as editors of Commentary Magazine.
