Columbus is a city that is partially located in Muscogee County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the balance had a total population of 185,781.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the balance has a total area of 571.9 km² (220.8 mi²). 559.7 km² (216.1 mi²) of it is land and 12.3 km² (4.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.15% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 185,781 people, 69,599 households, and 47,536 families residing in the balance. The population density is 331.9/km² (859.7/mi²). There are 75,940 housing units at an average density of 135.7 persons/km² (351.4 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the balance is 50.31% White, 43.85% African American, 0.38% Native American, 1.54% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 1.90% from other races, and 1.87% from two or more races. 4.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 69,599 households out of which 34.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% are married couples living together, 19.6% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 31.7% are non-families. 26.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the balance the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.6 males.

The median income for a household in the balance is $34,853, and the median income for a family is $41,288. Males have a median income of $30,245 versus $24,348 for females.
