Colchester, Vermont

Colchester is a town located in Chittenden County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 16,986.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 151.9 km² (58.6 mi²). 95.5 km² (36.9 mi²) of it is land and 56.3 km² (21.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 37.10% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 16,986 people, 6,144 households, and 4,184 families residing in the town. The population density is 177.8/km² (460.5/mi²). There are 6,727 housing units at an average density of 70.4/km² (182.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.53% White, 0.63% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.58% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,144 households out of which 34.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% are non-families. 22.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 16.2% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $51,429, and the median income for a family is $58,358. Males have a median income of $38,268 versus $30,880 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,472. 6.3% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.2% are under the age of 18 and 9.7% are 65 or older.
