Though often regarded as a member of the American left, Hitchens was a vocal opponent of Bill Clinton, and authored a book entitled No one left to lie to denouncing the president. At the same time, he has also been an outspoken opponent of the far left and socialism, often taking aim at leading leftists such as Noam Chomsky. His support of the 2003 Invasion of Iraq found him feeling politically isolated on the left, and thus led to his resignation from The Nation.
