Chatsworth, Georgia

Chatsworth is a city located in Murray County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,531. The city is the county seat of Murray County6.

Geography

Chatsworth is located at 34°46'20" North, 84°46'44" West (34.772336, -84.778977)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.3 km² (4.7 mi²). 12.2 km² (4.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.42% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,531 people, 1,416 households, and 945 families residing in the city. The population density is 289.5/km² (749.5/mi²). There are 1,546 housing units at an average density of 126.7/km² (328.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.66% White, 1.16% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.31% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 6.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,416 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 29.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,273, and the median income for a family is $44,063. Males have a median income of $32,688 versus $25,033 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,218. 17.1% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line.
