Centralia is a city located in Nemaha County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 534.

Geography

Centralia is located at 39°43'27" North, 96°7'52" West (39.724032, -96.131079)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 534 people, 216 households, and 127 families residing in the city. The population density is 458.2/km² (1,186.0/mi²). There are 235 housing units at an average density of 201.6/km² (521.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.82% White, 0.19% African American, 0.94% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.37% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. 2.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 216 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% are married couples living together, 3.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% are non-families. 38.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 28.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 30.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,240, and the median income for a family is $32,625. Males have a median income of $22,500 versus $16,591 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,813. 14.5% of the population and 8.0% of families are below the poverty line.
