Campylobacter

Campylobacter jejuni is a curved rod shaped bacteria, that is commonly found in animal faeces and is one of the most common causes of (minor) human diarrhea.

It is commonly associated with chickens and has been found in Wombat and Kangaroo faeces, being a cause of bushwalkers diarrhoea.

Culture. It is grown on specially selective plates and is favoured by a higher than the usual culture temperature of 37. (eg 42). Oxidase positive.

Treatment. Usually none. Severe or prolonged cases may require Erythromycin or norfloxacin[?].
