Local Government
Cambridgeshire is served by Cambridgeshire County Council (http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/). In 1974 the county was divided into administrative districts governed by their own District Councils:Cambridge City, East Cambridgeshire, Fenland, Huntingdonshire, Peterborough City, and South Cambridgeshire
In 1998 Peterborough City Council was promoted to a unitary authority, allowing it to become independent of the County Council. However, some county-wide organisations such as the police and fire services remain.
