Opatija

Opatija (Italian Abbazia), is a popular summer and winter resort in Croatia, northeastern Istria, 56 miles southeast of Trieste by rail and near to port of Rijeka[?].

It is situated on the Gulf of Kvarner (Quarnero or Carnaro) in a sheltered position at the foot of the Monte Maggiore (4580 feet), and is surrounded by beautiful woods of laurel[?].

The average temperature is 50°F in winter, and 77°F in summer.

The old abbey, San Giacomo della Priluca, from which the place derives its name (abbazia is abbey in Italian), has been converted into a villa[?].

The whole sea-coast to the north and south of Opatija is rocky and picturesque, and contains several smaller winter-resorts.
