Welcome to Project Sourceberg, aka WikiSource, a companion to [Wikipedia] to improve Wikipedia's handling of primary sources. Itīs a [wiki]-[FOBR] initiative.
ps.wikipedia.com is a temporary address, as it should be the site for the Pashto language version of Wikipedia.
See /Talk for discussion of a new name/address.
Mission
Project Sourceberg isn't trying to duplicate the efforts of other online text resources, such as [Project Gutenberg] and the [Online Book Initiative]'s efforts; rather, we want to complement them.
The goal is for Project Sourceberg to complement the more organized and hierarchical effort of Project Gutenberg, just as the anarchistic Wikipedia complements Nupedia.
Development is happening so that Project Sourceberg can work as an interface for easily linking from Wikipedia to a Project Gutenberg file.
Wikipedia should have articles about significant original works like [Shakespeare], and use Project Sourceberg to link to the PG and OBI databases.
We also hope that Project Sourceberg can act as an interface for people to easily submit new work to PG.
Wikipedia is designed for anonymous, constant editing, which is great for the accumulative, morphing encyclopedia entries.
Project Sourceberg needs to encourage easy additions and corrections but discourage arbitrary editing of the primary texts.
Features to come
- Different interface; maybe three fields, one for prefatory comments, one for the text itself, and one for external references
- Easy reference/crosslinking to Wikipedia, like with links such as (from Wikipedia) [[ps:The Declaration of Independence]] or (from Project Sourceberg) [[wp:History of the United States]]. (This is a form of [InterWiki] notation.)
- Handling of alternate formats of texts, such as text, HTML, multiple-page HTML, wikified text, etc.
Getting it going
Once we implement the [[ps:*]] and [[wp:*]] notation, we can begin by moving off the primary sources that are already on Wikipedia, like the Constitution and the GPL; some of which have been listed at [WikiBiblion].
