Available also by anonymous ftp from host nic.funet.fi, file

A somewhat clarified version, still very messy:

Ideas for "meta" groups (should there be alt.uu.x.cafe etc. for these?):

1. Where is the pub? The most interesting, enjoyable, and possibly
important aspect of face-to-face class work is the social interaction
which frequently continues outside of the class setting. Is this
possible in the UU setting, and if so, how will it work? It's going
to be pretty gosh-darned difficult to have the class over for dinner
at the end of the term, that's for sure!

alt.uu.cafe Usenet University cafe

A forum for unofficial discussions, humorous articles, flames,
tongue-in-cheek articles, satire, art and so on.

(other possible names: alt.uu.cafeteria, alt.uu.pub, alt.uu.gossip,
alt.uu.chat, alt.uu.freeform, alt.uu.toilet-wall)

alt.uu.admin Usenet University administration

For discussions on administrating UU and also the administration
(decision-making) process itself, perhaps/instead also a
motion/email-vote run administration.

alt.uu.pedagogy UU course design, pedagogy, course evaluation etc.

A group to discuss design of courses, to give feedback on the
didactics of courses, to discuss styles of learning in UU, teaching
connected to UU etc.

(other possible names: alt.uu.didactics, alt.uu.course-design)

alt.uu.learning Learning techniques

A group to discuss what learning techniques work best, exchange hints
& tips on self-education and other styles of learning.

(other possible names: alt.uu.learning-tech, alt.uu.learning.misc,
alt.uu.students)

alt.uu.library The information helpdesk of UU

Is there need for such a group? For finding material on certain
topics, the topical groups (alt.uu.lang.esperanto.misc) are probably
better places to ask than alt.uu.library, but it would be possible to
crosspost or perhaps leave alt.uu.library for discussions on more
generic information resource needs, like FAQ's on "How do I find XXX?"
(other possible names alt.uu.info-retrieval, alt.uu.resources,
alt.uu.info-services)

alt.uu.misc The catch-all discussion group of UU

Misc. discussions on UU not suitable for other groups. Does there
need to be a distinction alt.uu.cafe vs. alt.uu.misc?

alt.uu.grading Discussions on grading in UU

Just alt.uu.misc with keyword "GRADING" would probably suffice?

alt.uu.advocacy Getting people interested in UU

like the comp.*.advocacy groups

An unorganized list of other possible "meta" groups:

alt.uu.tools.lang
alt.uu.tools.lang.esperanto
alt.uu.tools.lang.russian

a group for recommended books? other documents? (alt.uu.library would
be for this, and perhaps could use material from alt.books.reviews?)

- discussions for creation of new topics
- "wanted" groups for new topics, for example alt.uu.lang.t-wanted

Here's a very messy and unorganized list of proposed / possible groups
for "disciplines" or "departments" of UU. Any work to organize it is
welcomed. Thanks for everyone fo ideas and suggestions.

Some possibilities for different styles of courses/study (as in
alt.uu.math.xxx.forum, alt.uu.math.xxx.lab etc.):

That makes me think there will be a serious need for a newsgroups expressly
dedicated to such exchanges between teachers or anyone else interested. I just
hope this kind of discussion will not suddenly emerge in groups identified as
"classrooms". Otherwise all the students will be mixed up !

What about some categories of newsgroup. Here are some:

	1) "classroom" groups
	2) "forum" groups
	3) "work-group" groups
	4) "lab"	groups
	5) "administration" groups
	6) your ideas...

This group is part of the Usenet University. For futher information
on UU, see directory pub/doc/uu on the machine nic.funet.fi.

A "material" group means that the group exists for postings of
course material, announcements, pointers to material and resources,
essays, etc. relevant to the "department" of the group and/or the
topic. This group is for one-time articles / posts - discussions are
_not_ suitable for this newsgroup but should instead be held in a
corresponding .misc group. Followups should be directed and posted
there. On some UU groups (where there is a volunteer teacher /
teachers) the material will be mostly for course-like work, on others
for self-study, on others the main info will be something else. The
conventions will form as time passes and while there are none, a wide
range of relevant postings will appear. Later, different styles of
learning will perhaps spin off different newsgroups.

A "misc" group exists for discussions on learning, followups on the
"material" group articles, and other discussion relevant to the
department or topic.

Then possible topics:

alt.uu.lang.material
alt.uu.lang.esperanto.material
alt.uu.lang.spanish.material
alt.uu.lang.spanish.misc
alt.uu.lang.russian.material
alt.uu.lang.russian.misc
alt.uu.lang.russian.misc
alt.uu.geography.material
alt.uu.geography.misc
alt.uu.math.material
alt.uu.comp.material
alt.uu.media.material
alt.uu.philosophy.material
alt.uu.philosophy.misc
alt.uu.med.misc
alt.uu.med.material
alt.uu.virtual-worlds.material
alt.uu.media.misc
alt.uu.geography.misc
alt.uu.philosophy.misc
alt.uu.comp.gnu.elisp.misc
alt.uu.comp.gnu.misc

Material groups, how soon are they needed if at all?

alt.uu.misc.material
alt.uu.virtual-worlds.material
alt.uu.lang.esperanto.material
etc.

I suggest the discussions on creating new alt.uu.math.* groups etc.
should be carried out in alt.uu.math.misc, etc. - perhaps also
crossposted to alt.uu.future.

alt.uu.lang.esperanto.material
alt.uu.virtual-worlds.material
alt.uu.virtual-worlds.misc
alt.uu.misc.material
[ already created groups deleted ]

Perhaps also the proposed alt.uu.lang.esperanto.tools and
alt.uu.lang.esperanto.disc.uu groups, though I'm not sure about those.
As there's no alt.uu.misc, that would leave alt.uu.futre for a "misc"
group for now, which I would guess is sufficient. misc.misc and
misc.material are the "misc" department of UU, ie. for learning on
topics, not discussions on UU.

Later there would perhaps be groups like alt.uu.med.admin for the med
department administration things, alt.uu.media.papers (for posting
papers on medical topics), alt.uu.media.seminar, alt.uu.media.announce
(announcements on the media department), alt.uu.media.tutors (for
announcing available volunteer tutors) etc, but those needn't be
created now.

>Actually, I think that there is already a great deal of educational use of
>the nets - perhaps news is already fulfilling an important role in this
>without having to formalise that any more.. but this last bit is just a
>thought...

This is true. But I'll try to make the originial idea of UU a bit
more clear - it's not so much to formalize, but rather to better
manage resources, to make people find resources better, whether the
resources be teachers, self-study material, groups of students to
teach, books on certain topics, descriptions of degress on ordinary
universities, etc. etc.
