An example is YHDRA, an NGO in southwest China that not only completed a translation of Hesperian’s Community Guide to Environmental Health but also undertook an extensive field-testing process that allowed them to adapt the material and effectively address local environmental conditions, incorporating indigenous knowledge and healing methods. By discussing the material with people in nine regions, from at least seven ethnic groups, and spanning topics from farming to mining, from tourism to fishing, and beyond, their work is a major achievement in ensuring the accessibility, applicability, and usefulness of this resource to the improvement of environmental health throughout China. We are excited to announce that, for the first time, this book is available for purchase directly from Hesperian Health Guides in California, thanks to our engagement with Print on Demand technology and an extension of our partnership with YHDRA. We are now proud to offer two of our titles in Chinese for purchase: Where Women Have No Doctor and A Community Guide to Environmental Health!Explore these exciting resources today, along with more titles in other languages: Where Women Have No Doctor in Haitian Kreyol and Where There Is No Doctor in Portuguese (Mozambique). My wife and I live in North Carolina, which does not allow direct-entry midwives, and thus only has one independent birthing center 3 hours away from us.
Fortunately we live close enough to South Carolina (which does allow direct-entry midwives) that there was an independent birthing center 35 minutes away from us. We were very happy with our experience and recommend that all expectant mothers look into that option.

In many parts of the world I believe a cheaper product can be made using local materials and, more importantly, a better product will result. I may have a few issues with the criticisms reported above, but that does not alter the fact that in Africa we can usually make a higher quality product – locally. I can’t normally post out lip balm samples, but I can help with recipes.

A MASSACRE IS NOT A MASSACRE
I don’t write poems but, in any case, poems are not poems.
Long ago, I was made to understand that Palestine was not Palestine;
I was also informed that Palestinians were not Palestinians;
They also explained to me that ethnic cleansing was not ethnic cleansing.
And when naive old me saw freedom fighters they patiently showed me that they were not freedom fighters, and that resistance was not resistance.
And when, stupidly, I noticed arrogance, oppression and humiliation they benevolently enlightened me so I can see that arrogance was not arrogance, oppression was not oppression, and humiliation was not humiliation.
I saw misery, racism, inhumanity and a concentration camp.
But they told me that they were experts in misery, racism, inhumanity and concentration camps and I have to take their word for it: this was not misery, racism, inhumanity and a concentration camp.
Over the years they’ve taught me so many things: invasion was not invasion, occupation was not occupation, colonialism was not colonialism and apartheid was not apartheid.
They opened my simple mind to even more complex truths that my poor brain could not on its own compute like: “having nuclear weapons” was not “having nuclear weapons,” “not having weapons of mass destruction” was “having weapons of mass destruction.”
And, democracy (in the Gaza Strip) was not democracy.
Having second class citizens (in Israel) was democracy.
So you’ll excuse me if I am not surprised to learn today that there were more things that I thought were evident that are not: peace activists are not peace activists, piracy is not piracy, the massacre of unarmed people is not the massacre of unarmed people.
I have such a limited brain and my ignorance is unlimited.
And they’re so f***ing intelligent. Really.
(Ghassan Hage is professor of anthropology and social theory at the University of Melbourne.)

My complaint about this blog is that it repeats one-sided, disputed, and in some cases simply wrong information.
Whether you like it or not, Israel’s blockade is not an illegal violation of international maritime law. Look it up.
And using phrases like “premeditated attack,” “vital supplies,” and “military action against civilian populations” slants the article in a way which is unseemly for a non-profit health organization.

No thinking person trusts Israel anymore, and they trust even less Israel’s apologists in the comment-sphere. Picking out minute, irrelevant “inconvenient facts” doesn’t strengthen your case, it makes you look desperate, because you are desperate, as is your cause. If you really care so much about the innocent people of Gaza and their use by political actors as pawns, at least have the integrity to focus your criticism on the most powerful political actors in their plight, namely Israel and Egypt. The relevance of Hamas doesn’t extend past sloppy efforts like this to deflect criticism from Israel. In fact, this sort of Israeli propaganda only serves to reinforce the position of Hamas, whose political clout in Gaza has only declined since they won the last elections. But in its paranoiac desperation, Israel wouldn’t dare allow Gazans to actually vote again and instead attempts to bully Hamas out of existence–a thoroughly counterproductive strategy.

This flotilla, from the start, was intended to be a provocation. Far from ‘vital supplies,’ the flotilla had a disorganized hodge-podge of mostly-used clothing and medicines, some of which were expired. The BBC reported that both Israel and Egypt had offered to carry the supplies into Gaza, but were rebuffed, because the flotilla wanted an incident at sea.
Well, they certainly got it.
People are dead, Israel has a black eye, and the knee-jerk blaming Israel for everything wrong in the Middle East continues unabated.
I certainly don’t condone what happened in the inspection raid. There is never a situation where it is alright to kill people. And the innocent people of Gaza are certainly suffering as the pawns of political forces. But those forces are on both sides, not just one. Until Hamas stops firing rockets from Gaza into Israel, the blockade will continue.
I’m disappointed to see Hesperian not looking more deeply into the situation, but instead reposting an entirely one-sided portrayal of what happened.

We need to ensure that patients with blood cancer are not denied effective drugs simply because a pharma company wants to make money.

Any person regardless of ability to pay or any other factor has to be treated by hospitals offering emergency care.
Those without the ability to pay often are covered under numerous other systems. The other systems you have mentioned in Canada and Australia have a greatly lower number of people that they have to take care of. And the level of care varies greatly depending on where in Canada (or Australia I presume) you live.

But why? To this day and despite women’s efforts to press for equal rights (the very efforts that inspired the first International Women’s Day in 1911), women all over the world get paid less than men and are more likely to live in poverty. So limited access to health care due to poverty probably means that many women don’t learn they are infected with HIV until they develop serious AIDS-related infections.” Excellent points. If we could identify the link to fair pay and disparity in receiving health care information, that the two are indeed linked versus lack of resources in media and then political control of media, we’d all be better off.
Excellent points.

I’m sure it’s not as simple in other situations, where there isn’t a conventional (or agreed upon) term. There is a fine line between inventing new words, intentionally (ala Garcia Marquez o Borges) or unintentionally by mistranslating (ala non-native speaker). When renown writers, artists or journalists invent new words, nobody blinks. When a non-native speaker does the same, we all assume it’s a mistranslation.
Either way, I appreciate your work and translation efforts.

provided you use them for business purposes. For example, if you subscribe
to the Wall Street Journal, a business-related newspaper, you can deduct the

Firstly, I understand very much that what I am about to comment on may sound left field new age stuff and laughed at. Yet, I wonder what consequence on our water if my comment has any merit. I wonder what logics would be sparked in our minds if further basic research was taken with open minds.
From a domestic point of view the general public can access all manner of water treatment devices. Those that use them put value on their water, thereby putting value upon themselves. Doesn’t matter how good they are. The intent is there.
The emergence of a slow bonding between metaphysics and Western science is offering interesting principles that can be applied easily to many of our water issues around purity.
The use of ‘energy’ ( Ether, Prana, Chi etc ) is obviously not a whimsical notion. It has been and is a part of many daily practices of many wise people.
It seems logical then to allow this to apply to our water supply, especially to those in need. If one looked at the research and simple observations of Viktor Shauberger, the great Austrian Environmentalist, one would be far more compassionate to the theories involved.
The Vortex Energizer helps the average person to purify their water without electricity or any other power source. It relies solely on the attraction of ether. Like a radio antenna attracts a frequency, so this attracts its frequency ( of far greater significance).
I wonder if we could see the energy ( Ok some do) if our collective acceptance of this principle would be more readily acknowledged and acted on. I suspect yes, which begs the question: is it the theory that lacks merit or our judgment of it.
All the best
Dane

At the Eye Check-up Camp organized on World Sight Day, 8th October 2007, by Sri Sathya Sai Sewa Organization (of New Delhi) at MCD Primary School in Vikaspuri, Dr. Narendra Kumar (Trustee, Eye Care India), flanked by volunteers, examined 138 students, and those with `departures from normal’ were advised as under
Rx for antibiotic eye drops 12
Rx for vitamin B-complex 13
Rx for multi-vitamin tabs. 1
Advice for checking up of patency of lacrimal passage 1
Advice for refraction check-up 20
Advice for orthoptic check-up 1
Advice for fundus examination 2
There was one case each of the following conditions
Sub-conjunctival haemorrhage
Blephritis
Suspected blockage of lacrimal duct
It was felt that attending to such students belonging to poor families will become more meaningful when rather than mere advice, there’s provision for free
1. distribution of antibiotic eye drops & multivitamin preparations and
2. professional refraction check-ups followed by dispensing of spectacles.
But since this exercise needs adequate funds, there’s urgent need of contributions by corporate houses / funding organizations.

Comment on Repression of the Right to Water Movements: El Salvador and Mexico by Alicia https://hesperian.org/2007/07/20/repression-of-t/#comment-81 Tue, 24 Jul 2007 19:43:29 +0000 http://hesperian.org/2007/07/20/repression-of-t/#comment-81 For those of you interested on the effects of privatization on ordinary individual, especially when MNCs privatize essential infrastructure such as water, electricty, railways and health care, you should check out the new documentary “The Big Sell-Out.”
This documentary challenges current economic orthodoxy in contending that the dogmatic claims of the international business establishment for neo-liberal development policies are not supported by modern economic science. More importantly, it dramatically demonstrates how the implementation of these policies is having disastrous consequences for millions of ordinary people around the globe.
While national and international economic discourse is fixated on increasing efficiency and economic growth, The Big Sellout reminds us that there are faces behind the statistics. It raises serious questions about the neo-liberal credo that government best serves the public interest by becoming a servant to corporate interests. But brave individuals, like those showcased in this important new film, are standing up and demanding an alternative to the prevailing neo-liberal model, a model that the film shows to be as hollow as it is unsustainable.
In particular to Latin America, the films documents how citizens in Cochabamba, Bolivia have organized enormous protests in 2000, following the decision by the Bolivian government to sell the public water company to a private corporation, which would have made water cost-prohibitive to much of the population. The Big Sellout shows how ordinary people are fighting the neo-liberal commodification of basic public goods.
If you are interested in obtaining a copy of this film, it is available from CA Newsreel at http://www.newsreel.org

Comment on “Sicko” at the US Social Forum by jdach https://hesperian.org/2007/06/22/sicko-at-the-us/#comment-86 Mon, 09 Jul 2007 14:27:26 +0000 http://hesperian.org/2007/06/22/sicko-at-the-us/#comment-86 What is the real solution, if Michael Moore’s government sponsored universal health care is not the answer?
The crux of the “SICKO” documentary is the disconnect between our expectations and the reality of health care. We are expecting compassionate care from another human being, and instead we get a faceless corporation. The person behind the desk or window is an agent of a health care corporation, which is not a human being, whose primary goal is to increase corporate profit.
This is America, and corporate profit is good, the profit motive forming the basis America’s greatness. The basic problem is that a corporation is not a human being. Therein lies the fallacy of replacing a corporation with a government agency, neither of which is a human being, when what we really want is a human being to deliver compassionate health care, and assist in serious health care decisions.
Ultimately we must at some point ration health care to avoid national bancruptcy. We can’t provide everything for everybody. Moore’s film, SICKO replaces the corporate health company with the government agency as the agent of this care rationing.
My major point here, is that the larger issue which is ignored by the SICKO film, is, control of medical information, which then determines expenditure and rationing patterns. The control of medical information controls the money.

I’m sure this issue will remain until the health care of people becomes more important than the financial health of a few certain people and companies.
